"A writer of distinction." - E. M. Forster

"[A]n unusual, talented book with many good things in it. [...] Stephen Gilbert is an interesting writer, whose material is out of the ordinary run of things." - Anthony Powell

Marcus Brownlow was a strange and imaginative young schoolboy whose dreams sometimes foretold the future. Now he's nineteen, unemployed, directionless, and not ready to grow up. An unexpected invitation from a school friend to visit him at the house of his eccentric millionaire uncle Mr. Burnaby seems to hint at adventure and a change of fortune. But what Marcus doesn't know is that Mr. Burnaby wants his help in a series of strange experiments whose ultimate goal is to discover what happens to the soul after death. What begins as harmless fun as Mr. Burnaby teaches Marcus how to project his spirit out from his body quickly becomes more sinister, and may lead to a horrible fate even more terrifying than death. . . .

Stephen Gilbert (1912-2010) is best remembered for his novel Ratman's Notebooks (1968), twice filmed as Willard, and for his friendship as a young man with the much older novelist Forrest Reid. The Burnaby Experiments (1952) is a brilliant and unclassifiable novel, part fantasy, part science fiction, part horror, and partly a thinly veiled and blackly humorous fictionalization of Gilbert's difficult relationship with Reid. This first-ever reprinting of Gilbert's scarce novel coincides with its 60th anniversary and features the original jacket art by legendary book designer Berthold Wolpe.

Stephen Gilbert (1912-2010) only published five novels of which The Burnaby Experiments (1952) was his penultimate work. Gilbert creates an interesting framework to The Burnaby Experiments. In an Introduction the narrator describes having attended school "with a boy called Marcus Brownlow." After losing contact with Marcus for a number of years, the unnamed narrator is contacted by solicitors and discovers that Marcus has died, naming the narrator as his "literary executor" and leaving him an inheritance of ten thousand pounds. Receiving a manuscript from the solicitors written by Marcus, the narrator determines it is an autobiography that is "enormously interesting," but "completely unsophisticated: it gave the impression of being written by a child." Attempts to get it published as per Marcus' wishes, all fail. Later, the narrator also receives from the solicitors a journal written by John Burnaby, an older man who was Brownlow's friend and companion. Attempts to get both journals and additional notes that are sent to the narrator written by Marcus are also failures, so the narrator combines the materials and rewrites it all as a novel. Thus, The Burnaby Experiments is given life.

In The Burnaby Experiments Burnaby and Brownlow form a strong bond as they begin to engage in occult-like experiments trying to discover secrets of life and death that have escaped mankind for ages, but when Marcus meets Hazel Morley the friendship becomes threatened and Marcus is forced to make a no-win choice.

As Burnaby and Marcus head inexorably to their greatest and "last experiment," readers are likely to feel the tone of the novel becoming more and more ominous. Adding to the dire ambiance is the fact that as the novel progresses, the unknown narrator assembling the various works into novel form begins to make more appearances, taking note of how he has assembled the material and commenting on both Burnaby and Brownlow. The uncanny and inevitable conclusion of The Burnaby Experiments comes close to matching that of Henry James' work in The Turn of the Screw.

The Burnaby Experiments delivers unforgettable surprises and is a chilling and mesmerizing work of the occult most certainly worth readers' attention now that it is back in print.
