I was very pleased with this book. First it just good to find somethign that isn't based in europe not that anythign is wrong with that but europe is not the whole world. Anyway, the ability of the child to accept his culture but his father's issues with it is interesting. A different look as the field of "swords and socery" and you even learn a little about some traditional African weapons.Product details

I really enjoyed this book. As I read, I really felt as though I could see the images in my mind as the story is told. The incorporation of magic, adventure and suspense will surely keep young readers attentive.
This book is awesome. I thorougly enoyed it and can't wait for the second one to come out. While reading the book you feel like you are on a magical journey.
Readers age 12 and older will have a hard time putting Summer of Leopard Maasai down. An American boy, mentored by wise Maasai elders, undertakes magical adventures and also is introduced to traditional rural life in Kenya. What an experience, to learn from people who are at home with the African terrain and wildlife! As a result of reading this book, I imagine Africa differently and want to learn more.
Summer of Leopard Maasai is magic. In this book magical events, magical animals and magical people inhabit a magical African landscape. This story should be on the big screen, with special effects recreating the magic. This gifted writer's wonderful imagination and story line keep the reader wondering what`s going to happen next, and what happens next is always surprising and engaging--and magic.
This book is instructive as well as entertaining. It should be on a reading list for middle and high school students to help kids learn to appreciate other cultures and the fact that even though beliefs and traditions may differ, humans share the same emotions and kinds of joys and difficulties.
That's one of the most famous lines from Chinua Achebe's novel "Things Fall Apart" and describes what makes this book palatable. It's basically a boy's adventure story with an action-packed plotline culminating in a battle scene. However, the lyrical African proverbs sprinkled throughout, the exotic setting, which lends the opportunity to bring in all sorts of wild animals, plus an idyllic depiction of a rural Maasai family, give the story enough of a twist that it makes for interesting and engaging reading.
I visited Kenya as a volunteer teacher 15 years ago while I was in college. My most vivid memory of the Maasai was seeing them bussed into the city to protest a land issue. They walked through the streets carrying their tall spears and staffs to the High Court where they sat cross-legged on the floor listening to the proceedings all day. The Nairobi city people were taken aback at the sight and seemed to regard the Maasai as foreign and exotic just like I did as a tourist.
This book offers a rare and fanciful view into what life in a Maasai village might be like--from the viewpoint of an American child. I think it would make great reading not just for kids in the US who are unfamiliar with such a different way of life, but also for kids in cities like Nairobi who are often far removed from the life that goes on just beyond their city's limits.
Boys, especially, will thrill to the adventures of 12-year-old Sankara as he spends a summer in Kenya with his American mother. He learns that he's the great-grandson of a powerful Maasai shaman, something that his Westernized father has never told him. He quickly gets caught up in the Elgon Maasais' struggle with a rival tribe. Use of traditional magic by both groups results in a story that's reminiscent of the Harry Potter series, but with a difference. Wheras J.K. Rowling's magic was purely fanciful, M.M. Khamala's incorporation of actual African lore gives this book educational value. Furthermore, the similarity of protagonist Sankara's background to that of President Obama makes publication of this story particularly timely. Highly recommended for junior high school libraries.
When I first picked this book on the kindle store I did not know what to expect. I had the book recommended to me by a close friend. After reading the long and semi-confusing description (no offence) I was even more confused, but I decided to buy it anyway. After reading the first and second chapters I was hooked with the adventures of 12 year old Sankara and his trip to Africa. The history about the Maasai tribes is interesting and the addition of laibon magicians and sorcery make this book a fun read. This thrilling story about magic and adventure is one that I can highly recommend you should pick up. I personally cannot wait for the next book and can only hope that it will come out soon! -Michael ScutarI
